New Cross Gate Cuttings volunteer days with The London Wildlife Trust

A great way to get involved with the London Wildlife Trust in Lewisham is to become a conservation volunteer to make a real difference for wildlife in your local area, learn new skills and to gain a deeper understanding of woodland ecology. They have monthly conservation workdays at New Cross Gate Cutting on the following dates:

  • Saturday 27th May
  • Saturday 17th June
  • Saturday 22nd July
  • Saturday 19th August
  • Saturday 23rd September

For more information or to book a place on a workday please email Sam Bentley-Toon

Volunteering and photography at Dacres Wood

The Friends of Dacres Wood are planning a volunteering session Jan 31st in the morning, and in the afternoon, from 2.30, they will going to be going round with a camera just looking and recording what they see growing, or rotting as the case may be – just as interested in fungi!  They would be very pleased if others could join them, with cameras, so that there are more than one pair of eyes.

Nature’s Gym at Frendsbury Gardens

Nature's Gym volunteers get to work on 'live' willow hedge

Nature’s Gym volunteers get to work on ‘live’ willow hedge

The last Nature’s Gym session of the year was held in Frendsbury Gardens on Saturday.  A chill wind blew, but the volunteers stayed enthusiastic – maybe it was the thought of the tea and mince pies that were to come!  Some of the volunteers spent time weeding the beds, especially the herbaceous boarders.  A few others got to work building a ‘live’ willow hedge near the pond.   The Friends didn’t want to make it too high because people still wanted to see the pond, so it was build to act as more of a visual barrier. Hopefully, when it grows it will look natural and fit in with the natural surroundings of the Garden. It was a bit of an experiment, so we look forward to going back in the Spring to see if it has worked! The willow dome where Little Explorers holds story time looks great – so we have high hopes!

Halloween at Devonshire Road Nature Reserve

2015_10_13 Dev Rd Halloween

Halloween at Devonshire Road

The Friends of Devonshire Road are looking for volunteers to help with Halloween at the reserve, both on the day and before (posters, baking etc.). The last two or three years have seen this becoming a really popular event, they get up to 200 people now, so they need plenty of helpers on the night. Drop us an e-mail with your details and how you can help if you are interested and I will pass on your details.

A change is as good as a bike ride

Change in location

Change in location

The new (programme link includes change) Nature’s Gym programme may have only been out for a few days, but we have already had to make a change.  Our session on 22nd October 2015 will now be at Lower Sydenham Cycle Path.  This is a project that we have been working on n partnership with Sustrans who own the site. We have worked on this site a few times in the past, but there is still a lot to do. Come a long and find out their plans for the site and see how you can help.

Please pass this message on to any volunteer you see that may not see this post.  We will of course remind you nearer the time as well.

There is nothing we here at Nature’s Gym like more than hearing your feedback. If you have taken part in an event and have something to say about it, please let us know.  If we can improve things, we need to know!  If there are certain tasks or sites that you like, you should let us know!

This is why we have set up a ‘wall’ where you can tell us what you really think!
