The Nature’s Gym volunteers have been working in Mayow Park for quite a few years now. They have see the ‘Triangle’ area develop in to a really lovely area of bright flowers and scented herbs. The garden was originally inspired by permaculture principles and designed by one of the friends and his come on a long way. With the addition of the new cafe, it really is a great site to work on!
We will be back at Mayow Park in September to carry on with the work which included weeding, edging the borders, creating a path and fixing the bug hotel.
The volunteers from Nature’s Gym and the Friends of Mayow Park got together on Saturday 14 April to work on the newly planted triangle. There was quite a lot of work do to from planting whips and fruit bushes to a general tidy up.
Luckily a lot of people turned up to help, and the weather stayed good for us right up until we left! The volunteers first came to the site for two weeks last year, when works were just starting. There was plenty of work to do then which included putting in a new footpath, turning over the news beds and building a seating area.
Unfortunately, for once the work defeated us, but we still managed to get a lot done, including planting the fruit bushes. We look forward to coming back when our work comes to fruition and we can sample the ‘fruits of our labour’ (sorry!-ed.)
On Saturday 28th January from 12pm-3pm, the Friends of Mayow Park will be working with the London Orchard Project to plant 10 fruit trees and a fruit hedge. They will be there to offer their assistance and expertise to the volunteers!
So why not come along and help to plant 10 fruit trees and a fruit hedgerow? Wear warm clothes suitable for digging and planting. We would like people to be involved as orchard carers to look after these trees. If you are interested please contact the Friends of Mayow Park or call 020 8244 4259
Refreshments will be available to purchase at Grow Mayow
This project has been organised by London Orchard Project, Friends of Mayow Park (FOMP) and Lewisham Greenscene.
