Kings Fund report extols virtue of gardening and volunteering

Volunteering and gardening are great for you health

Volunteering and gardening are great for you health

A report published in May 2016 by the Kings Fund, has stated that,

“Gardens are therefore important to our health due to the numbers of people who engage with them in many different ways and for different reasons.”

 It goes on to say:

Increasing people’s exposure to, and use of, green spaces has been linked to long-term reductions in overall reported health problems (including heart disease, cancer and musculoskeletal conditions); it has also been linked to reduced levels of obesity and high physical activity, and higher self-rated mental health. Living in areas with green spaces also seems to weaken the effect of income inequalities on health. Gardens can provide other important environmental functions, such as reducing flood risk and moderating climate and pollution, which have knock-on benefits for health.

It is quite a long report, but the Executive Summary is well worth a read, because it explains this very nicely.  Maybe now is an even better time to go out and volunteer in one of your local parks and nature reserves, or maybe join a Friends Group – it could do you wonders!

The story of Ladywell Naiad

Earlier this month, the Story of the Ladywell Naiad was told over two nights, once in Manor Park and once in Ladywell Fields.  Story teller Richard Neville delighted crowds with humorous tales while London Bubble Theatre  provided music and fun activities.

Volunteer in Lewisham’s Rivers

Volunteering in Ladywell Fields

Volunteering in Ladywell Fields

London Borough of Lewisham runs a number of river related volunteering opportunities.  We are keen to get people involved in their local rivers and help us maintain them through bankside management and litter picks.  We tend to work in 4 parks; Brookmill Park, Chinbrook Meadows, Cornmill Gardens and Ladywell Fields.  Our new programme of events  has just been published.  So if you would like to get involved, please visit our River Volunteering tab where you will find all the information that you need.

You will find more information about how to get involved in Lewisham’s rivers over at our Rivers and People blog where you will find all the information on walks, talks and educational opportunities.

Nature’s Gym Programme July-September 2015

Volunteers enjoying their wade!

Volunteers enjoying their wade!

Please see attached the Nature’s Gym programme for July-September 2015.  I hope there is something in there that you will enjoy!

Please be aware that there are quite a few sessions that involve wearing waders and working in the river. At these sessions, we can not guarantee that there will be any work available on dry land. If working in water isn’t something that you feel comfortable with, we understand if you would prefer to take a break for a while. We will welcome you back with open arms once the 3 Rivers Clean Up is over!

If you would like to join in with these rivers sessions, booking is essential even if you are a regular volunteer. There are other sessions running throughout the week with our partners. You can find details of these events at the 3 Rivers Clean Up website or Facebook page.
