Due to illness Nature’s Gym on Thursday 26 July will now be at Ladywell Fields. There will be a wade and some bankside management work. The session on Saturday 28th July remains the same. Please pass the message on.
The community orchard planted in Ladywell Fields in 2011 is thriving, but like any orchard, it needs care and attention if the trees are to grow strongly and avoid disease. This is one of the Friends twice yearly volunteer sessions at which you can learn and help prune the trees, inspect and repair the guards, and mulch the trees with woodchip to keep the weeds down.
If you do come and you have any of the following, please bring them; thick gloves, sharp secateurs and garden buckets. Also at the risk of stating the obvious, please come in work clothes and robust shoes!
Pruning requires dry weather, so if it is raining, they will need to reschedule.
Volunteers are needed urgently to help with a clearance of sediment from the secondary channel in the North Field this coming Wednesday (28th). Meet at 10am by the 10,000 Hands cafe in the North Field. We will be working from 10am-3pm with a group of volunteers from Thames 21 to try to make the river flow more easily
A merry bunch of eager volunteers from the Lewisham branch of DWP came out on a wade today as part of the 3 Rivers Clean Up. 16 of us waded from Ladywell Fields to Catford and managed to pull out 10 bags of rubbish, a bin and a trolley. The trolley came in very handy when we had to take all the rubbish back to base! A big thank you to all of the staff that came – we hope to see you again next year!
The 3 Rivers Clean up is a is a three-week long intensive annual volunteer campaign to improve the rivers Ravensbourne, Pool and Quaggy in South East London. Now in its eighth year, this unique 3 Rivers Clean Up partnership program has been highly successful in removing and preventing the spread of Himalayan Balsam and other species such as Giant Hogweed and Japanese Knotweed, in the Ravensbourne River catchment. Removing invasive species is the main focus, however, the 3 Rivers Clean Up is a great opportunity to remove all the rubbish and debris that builds up within this urban river catchment.
