Maps don’t just show roads and paths to help you get from one place to another, they also show you where points of interest, such train stations and camp grounds are located.  Writing the name of all of these onto a map would make the map very hard to read and you would not be able to work out where you were going!   Therefore, those clever map people have come up with a much simpler way of showing us what things are, instead they use symbols.  Everything from windmills to churches and nature reserves to golf clubs all have their own unique symbol, and these are the same on every Ordnance Survey (OS) map in the UK
