Introduction to Herpetology course at Devonshire Road

A free 2 day course led by Tony Canning a local biologist/conservationist.  The course is for conservation workers and others with an interest in biology, ecology and conservation.  Each day will consist of a morning classroom talk followed by afternoon field work.

 

Saturday 13th July Introduction to Herpetology I

10:30              Arrival
11:00              Herpetology I – Amphibians
13:00              Lunch break
14:30              Tour of amphibian and reptile habitats at the Nature Reserve  – What are the features of good herp habitats?
16:00              Finish

Saturday 20th July Introduction to Herpetology II

10:30              Arrival
11:00              Herpetology II – Reptiles
13:00              Lunch break
14.30              Tour of amphibian and reptile habitats at the Nature Reserve  – What are the features of good herp habitats
16:00              Finish

Morning Talks:  Each talk will cover the following areas for the two groups of animals:

  • History, evolution and diversity
  •  Characteristics of modern forms
  •  Ecology and behaviour
  •  UK species
  • Conservation issues

Train: Honor Oak Park or Forest Hill
Overground (ELL): Honor Oak Park or Forest Hill (trains to West Croydon or Crystal Palace via New Cross Gate, NOT New Cross or Clapham Junction)
Local bus services include: 176, 185, 122, 197, 171, 356, 63, P4 & P12.
Car: If arriving by car there are no parking restrictions in the area.

Lunch:  Please bring your own packed lunch.  Tea and coffee provided.  Devonshire Road has basic kitchen facilities and a WC.  There is a mini-supermarket nearby but no other shops.
Clothing:  Outdoor shoes/boots, dress appropriately for the weather.
Optional, but useful:  Binoculars, hand lens, camera
