Our Friends at Wildcat Wilderness write

We are pleased to let you know about a new project in Lewisham. The Wild Cat Wilderness, the community greenspace project of the Lewisham Local charity, is launching a Sheds Project in Catford for those aged over 50.

This project is to help people stay healthier for longer both mentally and physically. This new community Shed is a place for people to learn new woodworking and green woodworking skills with an experienced facilitator, and pass on skills between each other.

Sheds are about having fun, sharing skills and knowledge with local people, and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. As a by-product of all of that, they reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, and they allow people to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent. They rebuild communities and in many cases, they save lives.

Who can join?

The Shed is open to anyone over 50 both men and women. Please note this project is suitable for those who are lonely, isolated, or with low mood or anxiety. Sorry we can’t accept those with more severe mental health problems.

When?

This community shed launched on the 21st April and will then take place every Tuesday 10am-1pm at the Wild Cat Wilderness in Catford.

How it works?

The Wild Cat Wilderness, part of the Lewisham Local charity, provides the ‘shed’ (a workshop), tools and equipment with a facilitator. All those attending will have an induction session to learn how to use the tools and equipment. Members can take part in the day-to-day running of the shed and decide on what they would like to make – including woodworking, green woodworking and skills sharing.

It provides members with the opportunity to contribute to their local community and gain a great sense of achievement by reusing, repurposing or recycling wood and trees from the woodland on site. The products, designed and created by the shed members, are made to help support the Wild Cat Wilderness charity project or sold to reinvest in the Sheds project.
