Inaugural meeting of the Friends of Dacres Wood and Open Day

At a very successful open day at Dacres Wood in early September, over 30 people turned up to see the site and find out more about how they could help explore ways in which we can encourage greater access and use, whilst ensuring wildlife is protected.  At the meeting we were lucky enough that someone put themselves forward to act as Chair!

A bid has already been put in to Perry Vale Ward Assembly for improvements to the pond and an inaugural meeting has been arranged for Sunday 30 September.  So things are happening fast!  We are still keen for new people to join the group, so if you are interested, please email Lewisham’s nature conservation team who will put you in contact with the friends.

Join the Friends of Dacres Wood and the Forest Hill Society at Dacres Wood.

Forest Hill Society Bulb Planting

I am sure many of you have seen and apppreciate the vast improvements that have been made to the front of Forest Hill Society.  This has been all sue to the hard work and dedication of a number of volunteers.  If you fancy joining in, there will be another session on Sunday 30 October 2011 from 2.30pm.  Details below!

Dacres Wood Freecycle day

As hilighted in an earlier post, the Forest Hill Society will be holding their own Frecycle Day at Dacres Wood on Saturday 24 September 2011, 11am-3pm.  You will be able to swap unwanted items for something you need. Typical items include CDs, DVDs, small electrical items, bikes, lamps, plants, kitchenware, books, clothes and toys.

Getting wet in Dacres Wood

The Nature’s Gym volunteers spent a very wet but enjoyable few hours clearing up Dacres Wood last week.  Despite the rain, 10 hardy folk came along to help and managed to get a lot of work done.  They were clearing the site in advance of the site’s open day planned by the Forest Hill Society on 23rd October.

Following the successful freecycle events in Devonshire Road Nature Reserve, they are also planning one in Dacres Wood.  This will be held on Saturday 24 September, 11.00am-3pm.

Brightening up Forest Hill Station

The Forest Hill Society are planning to continue with their good work at Forest Hill Station this weekend.  They will  be digging out and planting up the spare patch on platform 1 on Sunday 7th August and then dig out and plant up the bases of the trees on London Road opposite the Horniman Museum.

They will there from 2.30pm, so if you fancy helping out, please pop along with you trowel and gloves.

Forest Hill Station Planting Day Saturday 16th April 2011

Nature’s Gym and the Forest Hill Society work together to brighten up Forest Hill Station.

On a very sunny Saturday morning, volunteers worked to dig out the raised brick planters outside Forest Hill Station. People from the Forest Hill Society, Nature’s Gym and the Manager of Forest Hill Sation managed to dig out all the old shrubs and prepare the ground ready for the planting day on 16th April.

The Forest Hill Society are looking for more volunteers to help them with planting next week.  If you fancy a day helping brightening up this small area of Forest Hill, please pop along and join them from 2.30pm on 16th April. If you have your own tools, please feel free to bring them along on the day.
